Jocelyn’s story

Garth Juriansz, a friend and inspiration to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, lost his daughter Jocelyn to violence...

Jocelyn had something words cannot describe. She was a force of light; she made things happen all around her. Jocelyn inspired people and she related to them as individuals, entirely without prejudice. On any given day, Jocelyn could be found laughing and giving to the people around her. Her gentle spirit and breath-taking beauty were a rare combination, one that made her unforgettable. Her intuitive understanding of people allowed her to touch a wide range of personalities and to always have kind words, or share sidesplitting laughs or honest tears with each individual.

On September 24, 2005, tragedy struck. Jocelyn was attacked by her boyfriend of less than a year and left to die while he fled the scene, crashing his car into a wall and taking his own life. The days since have left so many shattered, confused and angry. But it is not this unjust heartbreak that defines Jocelyn Juriansz. Her vivacity, generosity, and loving nature are her gift to us all. This legacy will extend beyond her circle of friends and family as they fundraise on her behalf to improve the lives of women and men and speak words of encouragement to them, as Jocelyn would have.

Each morning when I wake up, I look for a ray of sunshine. It seems to bring hope for me that day. Unfortunately, time has not eased my pain or my tremendous loss. At my daughter’s memorial, I made a commitment to do all I can to prevent one more family from getting the phone call that I got in the middle of the night.

I share Jocelyn’s story whenever I can and I believe her energy and bright light will be an inspiration and encouragement to all who touch her life. If her story can help save one woman’s life or prevent an act of violence, I am sure she would want me to do all I can.

I am beaming right now as I think about her life and how she can still speak words of encouragement to those who need it.

Garth will share his story on May 8th during the Shelter from the Storm radio-thon.
